Cheers to holiday wine picks 2016

By Claudia Zapata | December 12th, 2016 | 6 Comments
As much as Sean and l enjoy drinking wine together, we love sharing good wine - and good wine picks - with family and friends. This year, everyone on our nice list is getting wine from HEB's stellar wine department. Our selections, all highly rated and thoughtfully procured by Sean, range from $16 to $55. So whether you're looking for something to toast with at your holiday party or tackling your own shopping list, there's something to help everyone get a little naughty. First up are a couple of wines from two of our favorite Australian producers. Chris Ringland's 2014 Three Rings Shiraz and Molly Dooker's 2015 The Boxer are rich, bold, chocolatey, spicy fruit bombs and perfe Read More...

Wine o’clock: our go-to white of the summer

By Claudia Zapata | July 14th, 2016 | 0 Comments
While Sean pours a variety of wines at home, we do tend to have a "house wine" from time to time. And, this summer's house wine is undoubtedly the 2014 Singing Grüner Veltliner from Laurenz V. und Sophie. At first taste, this Grüner Veltliner, which by the way, is the signature white grape of Austria, has the crispness and acidity of a Sauvignon Blanc but then reveals the softness and richness of a chard. A major crowd pleaser, this white is known for being food friendly so it's great for both summer soirees and pool or beachside barbecues. At about $14 a bottle, it's also pleasing on the wallet. Serve ice cold. Cheers! Laurenz V Grüner Veltliner Singing 2014 is av Read More...

Wine o’clock: a Syrah from California’s Central Coast you don’t want to miss

It's wine o'clock, and we're having 2012 Melville Syrah Estate Verna, a wine with awesome complexity for the price - only $26. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, who gave it a 94 point rating, called it "a no-brainer purchase and don't miss it." With crazy opaque color and gem-like shimmer at the edges, this full-bodied value has a nose that is exotic, savory, and distinctively Syrah, but the palate is lighter, supple & more Pinot Noir-like than expected. The deep blackberry & mulberry fruit really persists, as well as all those inky, kinky Syrah flavors: smoked meat, and tobacco and oyster shell - similar to the range of flavors & Read More...

Wine o’clock: a lovely white Burgundy at a steal of a deal

By Claudia Zapata | September 25th, 2015 | 0 Comments
Let's toast to the first weekend of the fall season. And, since it's still 90 degrees plus outdoors, let's go with a lovely white wine from France. Our latest wine pick is Louis Jadot 2014 Chardonnay, a light to medium body white Burgundy with delicate pear and apple blossom aromas with just the slightest hint of oak. Crisp and very well-balanced, this lovely white Burgundy has a clean finish with a surprising persistence of fruit. It not only holds up very well when opened but the flavors broaden and soften beautifully with aeration. Versatile enough to drink now but also great to stock up for the holidays - this Louis Jadot would be perfect for Tha Read More...
